Day 13 - 1/6 Fort Stockton, TX to Houston, TX

We got started on time for our trip through more of Texas. Texas is enormous when trekking across one of the widest parts of the state. Just outside of Fort Stockton, the horizon is mountainous. There was a very think layer of fog from which the mountains seemed to be rising. It almost looked like clouds laying on the ground. Rick said it was like the 'Nothing' from "The Neverending Story". There were also a bunch of windmills of which we could only see the top due to the fog.
Jolene slept for about the first 2 hours of the day's trip. For some reason, she could not keep her eyes open. Thankfully, she woke up in time to see some fun wildlife. After passing through yet another small town, we saw what looked to be some fenced in wild boars. Jolene questioned how they could be 'wild' boars if they were fenced in. We also caught sight of some antelopes hanging out close to the road. Not much further, Jolene saw a baby deer eating by the road all alone.
We passed through Fredericksburg, TX. Fredericksburg is a small town with German routes which became evident from the names of the shops & restaurants, along with the giant merry-go-round Christmas decoration in the town center.
Between Fredericksburg and the next small town, Jolene saw a farm that had camels. Hmm. Still not sure what that was about. There was no sign, but it could have been some type of zoo or preserve. On another farm, we saw an actual Texas Longhorn cow. Those horns are ENORMOUS! This was followed by a metal sculpture of a longhorn made out of car parts in Johnson City (the home of Lyndon B. Johnson).
We drove through the small city of Austin. Austin boasts the University of Texas (home of the Longhorns) and a small, yet pretty skyline.
We pulled into the outskirts of Houston about 4:30 pm (Central time) and drove around a bit before finally finding a Super 8. We checked in and napped. Yay! After our nice nap we drove into downtown Houston, AKA the Theater District to check out a little Irish Pub we found online. Turns out downtown Houston is D-E-A-D on Wednesday nights. The pub was really nice with a bar & some furniture details shipped in from Ireland. The bartender even had a brogue! After a couple of drinks, we headed back to the motel to hit the sack. Off to New Orleans in the morning.
